Why is XP 64 bit so much slower than XP 32 bit and even more so in web browsing?

What is the configuration of your system ? In theory it should run faster than 32 bit on a 64 bit system.

I have Pentium D dual core 3.0 GHz and 1GB of RAM.

That’s good enough to run XP 64, the problem might be with old drivers and other windows system files. What you can do is search your Motherboard manufacturer’s website and get the updated drivers for your system.
Then you should also update using Windows Update to get the latest patches and service packs for your Operating System. This will surely help to resolve the slow speed of your system. Also try a different Internet Browser, to check if that increases the browsing speed.
